Open Interest (OI) explained

Open Interest – total open contracts

Quick definition: Open Interest is the total value of futures contracts that are still open (not yet closed) in the market.

Each time someone opens a new position, OI rises; when positions are closed or liquidated, OI falls. OI shows how much money is "betting" on a coin with leverage.

Rising price with rising OI: new money is coming in, supporting the trend. Rising price with falling OI: mostly Shorts closing positions, so buying pressure may fade.

OI rising too fast in a short time usually signals leverage building up, making a sharp liquidation wave more likely.

💡 Example

BTC OI on Binance rises from $7 billion to $8.5 billion in 2 days while the price trades sideways: many traders are opening leveraged positions, waiting for a breakout.
