JPMorgan Brings JPM Coin Deposit Token to Ethereum Mainnet, Beyond Coinbase's Base

JPMorgan is extending JPM Coin, its token for U.S. dollar deposits, to Ethereum mainnet for institutional clients after nearly a year running only on Coinbase's Base network.

JPMorgan is extending JPM Coin (JPMD), its token representing U.S. dollar deposits at the bank, to Ethereum mainnet. Bloomberg reported the move on Monday, Oct 19, citing the bank's blockchain unit Kinexys.
Until now, JPM Coin ran only on Base, the layer-2 network built by Coinbase. The token is limited to vetted institutional clients and is not traded publicly or offered to retail users.
Key takeaways
- What happened: JPMorgan is expanding JPM Coin from Base to Ethereum mainnet for institutional clients.
- Timing: Bloomberg reported it on Oct 19; CoinDesk noted the bank did not give a specific go-live date.
- Scale: Kinexys processes about $7 billion in transactions a day on average, with more than $4 trillion cumulatively.
- Why Ethereum: deep on-chain liquidity and existing use by institutional clients.
- ETH price: trading around $2,360–$2,420 with no clear reaction to the news.
What JPM Coin is and how it differs from stablecoins
JPM Coin is a deposit token: each unit is a claim on real dollar deposits at JPMorgan and stays on the bank's balance sheet. That sets it apart from USDC or USDT, which are issued outside the banking system and backed by reserve assets.
Users must pass KYC and anti-money-laundering checks. As a result, the token cannot circulate freely in open DeFi applications the way regular stablecoins do.
Emma Landriault, head of Kinexys Labs, told Bloomberg that Ethereum offers deeper liquidity than rival networks. She said crypto firms could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral for tokenized assets.
Kinexys timeline and numbers
Kinexys is the rebranded Onyx, renamed in November 2024. At the time it handled more than $2 billion a day on average; that figure is now about $7 billion, roughly 3.5 times higher.

That is still small next to JPMorgan's overall payments business of about $12 trillion a day. Key JPM Coin milestones:
- Jun 2025: Kinexys pilots JPMD on Base.
- Nov 2025: JPM Coin goes live on Base for institutional clients.
- Dec 2025: JPMorgan's tokenized money market fund MONY launches on Ethereum.
- Jan 2026: plan announced to issue JPMD natively on Canton Network.
- Oct 19, 2026: expansion to Ethereum mainnet.
The bank has not published usage data per network. It is not yet clear which clients have transacted on mainnet or how much value has moved there.
What it means for crypto markets
The news did not move ETH sharply during the session. Bitcoin briefly tagged $83,000 and slipped back as U.S. and Asian equities rebounded, according to CoinDesk.
- Bull case: a major U.S. bank choosing Ethereum mainnet strengthens the network's role in real-world asset tokenization, where apps already hold close to $50 billion in locked value (DeFiLlama).
- Risk case: mainnet fees are higher than Base, so real volume may stay on Base; a permissioned token also does not directly create large near-term demand for ETH.
The race to tokenize bank deposits is heating up. Several large U.S. banks are reportedly building a shared tokenized deposit network, and BNY recently completed a tokenized Treasury repo with Citadel.
