Mt. Gox Delays Bitcoin Repayment Deadline to Oct 2027, 34,400 BTC Still in Wallets

The Mt. Gox trustee pushed the creditor repayment deadline back a fourth time, from Oct 31, 2026 to Oct 31, 2027. About 34,400 BTC (roughly $2.8 billion) remains in estate wallets, easing near-term supply fears.

Defunct exchange Mt. Gox has once again pushed back its deadline to repay creditors. A notice signed by rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi and dated Oct 16 sets the new cutoff at Oct 31, 2027, replacing the previous Oct 31, 2026 date.
Estate wallets still hold about 34,387 BTC, worth roughly $2.8 billion at current prices, according to Arkham. This is the fourth consecutive one-year extension.
Key takeaways
- New deadline: Oct 31, 2027 (Japan time), approved by a Tokyo court.
- Remaining stash: about 34,387 BTC, or roughly $2.8 billion (Arkham).
- Reason: many creditors have not finished the required paperwork, and some payments failed during processing.
- Progress: more than 19,500 creditors had received BTC and BCH as of March 2025.
- Market: BTC trades near $83,000, up about 1.7% over 24 hours (CoinGecko).
Why did Mt. Gox extend again?
The trustee said base, early lump-sum and intermediate repayments have "largely been completed" for creditors who finished the process. A sizable group, however, has yet to complete the steps needed to get paid.
A considerable number of payments also did not go through because of processing issues. The notice gives no updated creditor count and no distribution timetable.
How the deadline has shifted:
- 2023: the original Oct 31, 2023 deadline moved to Oct 2024 (first extension).
- Oct 2024: pushed to Oct 2025 (second), as large distributions were underway.
- Oct 27, 2025: pushed to Oct 2026 (third), just four days before the cutoff.
- Oct 16, 2026: pushed to Oct 31, 2027 (fourth), about two weeks early.
How much has the Mt. Gox stash shrunk?
In June 2024, just before repayments began via Kraken, Bitstamp, Bitbank and SBI VC Trade, Mt. Gox wallets held about 141,686 BTC. By August 2024, that figure had fallen to roughly 46,000 BTC.

In June 2026, the estate moved 10,422 BTC from cold storage to a new wallet, but Arkham saw no sign of selling. The wallets have been largely dormant since then.
In 2024, fears of a Mt. Gox sell-off helped drag BTC to around $61,000 in June. When the October 2024 extension was announced, prices bounced briefly.
What it means for crypto markets
The news lands with BTC stuck in an $80,000–$85,000 range. On Oct 20, bitcoin dipped to about $81,150 before climbing back above $83,000 as U.S. stocks rose and oil eased.
- Bull case: the risk of roughly 34,000 BTC hitting exchanges in the coming weeks is largely off the table, easing sentiment ahead of the Fed meeting.
- Risk case: the coins can still be distributed at any time before the new deadline, so any wallet movement could trigger short-term volatility.
It is worth noting that $2.8 billion is small relative to bitcoin's daily trading liquidity today. The impact is mostly on sentiment rather than actual supply.
What to watch next
- Oct 28: the Fed's rate decision, the next major macro event for BTC.
- Mt. Gox wallets: transfers to Kraken, Bitstamp or fresh addresses could signal new distributions.
- ETF flows: after a strong inflow day on Oct 19, watch whether buying holds up.
